Perianal abscess in children: an evaluation of microbiological etiology and the effectiveness of antibiotics

This 10-year retrospective study of 197 perianal abscess episodes in children found predominantly Gram-negative pathogens (71.6%), with high rates of antibiotic resistance including 42% ESBL-positive isolates. Ertapenem demonstrated the highest empirical coverage (81.7% monotherapy, 92.3% with glycopeptide), suggesting it as a preferred first-line agent in pediatric perianal abscesses.
