Implementation of a quadratus lumborum regional block protocol with assessment of effectiveness for patients with appendicitis: a quality improvement project

This retrospective study of 2,033 pediatric appendectomy patients demonstrates that quadratus lumborum blocks significantly reduce postoperative opioid consumption and rescue analgesic requirements in both uncomplicated and complicated appendicitis cases. The protocol shows QLBs are safe and effective for pediatric abdominal surgery, with reduced opioid use in PACU and first 24 hours postoperatively.
