Risk factors and outcomes in pediatric blunt cardiac injuries

This TQIP database study of 266,045 pediatric blunt trauma patients identifies pulmonary contusions and hemothorax as the strongest independent risk factors for blunt cardiac injury, with 26% mortality in affected children. The findings support targeted cardiac screening protocols when these thoracic injuries are present following pediatric trauma.
