Diagnosing Hirschsprung Disease in Children Younger than 6 Months of Age: Insights in Incidence of Complications of Rectal Suction Biopsy and Other Final Diagnoses

This retrospective study of 371 infants demonstrates that rectal suction biopsy is a safe diagnostic procedure with minimal complications (0.8% minor bleeding) for evaluating suspected Hirschsprung disease in children under 6 months. The study identified key clinical predictors including male sex, delayed meconium passage, and bilious vomiting, supporting a low threshold for biopsy in this age group.
