Surgical management of extrahepatic portal vein obstruction in children: advantages of MesoRex shunt compared with distal splenorenal shunt

This 18-year retrospective study of 21 children demonstrates MesoRex shunt superiority over distal splenorenal shunt for extrahepatic portal vein obstruction, showing significant improvements in liver synthetic function and coagulation parameters. Both procedures controlled variceal bleeding, but MesoRex shunt should be first-line when technically feasible.
