Plastic and Orthopaedic Interventions and Long-Term Sequelae in Children with Meningococcal Septicemia—40 Years of Experience at the University Children's Hospital Zurich

This 40-year retrospective study of 165 pediatric meningococcal septicemia cases reveals that 45% required plastic surgery for skin involvement, 9% needed amputations, and 6% developed long-term orthopedic complications appearing up to 11 years post-infection. The findings emphasize the need for systematic follow-up into adulthood to detect and manage delayed sequelae such as growth retardation and angular deformities.
