Significant neonatal intraoperative cerebral and renal oxygen desaturation identified with near-infrared spectroscopy

Study demonstrates that neonates undergoing surgery experience significantly higher rates of pathological cerebral and renal oxygen desaturation compared to older children, despite shorter operative times. NIRS monitoring revealed 40% cerebral and 77% renal desaturation in neonates, particularly during thoracoscopy and visceral manipulation procedures, supporting routine intraoperative NIRS use in this vulnerable population.
