Franklin Mall, the first basic scientist of pediatric surgery

Franklin Mall pioneered embryological research fundamental to pediatric surgery, including studies of intestinal malrotation and diaphragmatic development. As Johns Hopkins' first anatomy professor in 1893, he established the model of full-time basic science research in American medical schools.
