A Pilot Study to Determine the Incidence, Type, and Severity of Non-Routine Events in Neonates Undergoing Gastrostomy Tube Placement

Prospective study of 36 neonatal gastrostomy cases found clinician-reported non-routine events (deviations from optimal care) in 89% of procedures, averaging 3 per case, though correlation with formal NSQIP complications was not significant. Findings suggest G-tube placement in neonates involves frequent process deviations that may inform safety improvement efforts.
