The Impact of Groin Surgery during Childhood on the Incidence of Inguinal Hernia Repair and Its Postoperative Complications in Adult Life

Swedish cohort study of 68,238 children who underwent groin surgery found significantly increased risk of adult inguinal hernia repair (43% higher overall, 330% higher in women) after median 31-year follow-up. Despite elevated incidence, childhood groin surgery did not affect surgical outcomes or complication rates in adulthood.
