Hepatic oxidative injury: role of mitochondrial dysfunction in necrotizing enterocolitis

This experimental study demonstrates that necrotizing enterocolitis causes systemic hepatic injury through mitochondrial dysfunction and mtDNA depletion. Using a murine NEC model, researchers found decreased mitochondrial markers (COX3, CYTB, ND1) and increased oxidative stress in liver tissue, revealing a mechanism of remote organ damage in this severe neonatal disease.
