Early definitive operation for patients with anorectal malformation was associated with a better long-term postoperative bowel function

Retrospective study of 52 male patients with high- and intermediate-type anorectal malformations found that early anorectoplasty (before 5 months) resulted in significantly better long-term bowel function compared to surgery at 5 months or later. Patients operated early showed superior constipation and incontinence scores at 11 years of age.
