Epithelial and ganglionic distribution at the distal rectal end in anorectal malformations: could it play a role in anastomotic adaptation?

Histomorphological study of 60 ARM patients reveals that epithelial and ganglionic distribution in the distal rectal end mirrors normal anal canal structure, with anal transitional zone present in 82% of cases across all ARM types. Findings suggest that preserving the ATZ during anorectoplasty may improve anatomical reconstruction and potentially enhance functional outcomes.
