Are routine chest X-rays following chest tube removal necessary in asymptomatic pediatric patients?

Retrospective study of 116 chest tube removals in pediatric patients demonstrates that routine post-removal chest X-rays provide minimal clinical benefit in asymptomatic patients. Clinical symptoms alone reliably predict need for intervention, suggesting observation-based protocols may safely reduce unnecessary imaging.
