INCIDENCE OF COMPLICATIONS, ORGANIZATIONAL PROBLEMS, AND ERRORS: UNEXPECTED EVENTS IN 1,605 PATIENTS

This prospective study tracked all unexpected events in 1,605 pediatric surgical patients over 18 months, finding an 18.5% incidence rate with most events being minor. Notably, over half of adverse events were non-surgical, including organizational problems, highlighting the value of comprehensive event tracking for quality improvement.
