Segmental Atrophy of Explanted Livers in Biliary Atresia: Pathological Data from 63 Cases of Failed Portoenterostomy

This pathological study of 63 explanted livers from biliary atresia patients reveals that left lateral segment atrophy results from increased inflammation and fibrosis rather than poor bile drainage. The findings suggest segmental atrophy may reflect the underlying disease mechanism and that the left lateral segment is the optimal biopsy site during Kasai portoenterostomy.
