Risks of venous thrombosis and bleeding in critically ill adolescents after trauma or major surgery

Retrospective analysis of 27,647 critically ill adolescents identifies VTE risk exceeding 2% in patients with central venous catheters plus mechanical ventilation and brain or abdominal trauma/surgery. Only 1.4% of patients meet criteria for high VTE risk with acceptable bleeding risk, highlighting challenges in designing thromboprophylaxis trials for this population.
