The role of preoperative instructions in parents’ understanding of preoperative fasting for outpatient pediatric urology procedures

Prospective study of 335 parents demonstrates that adding visual aids to preoperative instructions nearly doubled parental understanding of aspiration risk as the rationale for fasting (72% vs 38%, OR 4.73). Findings suggest enhanced educational materials improve comprehension of preoperative fasting guidelines in pediatric outpatient urology.
