Deprivation increases perforation risk in paediatric appendicitis

Case-control study of 304 children in West Scotland found that socioeconomic deprivation independently predicts appendiceal perforation risk, even after controlling for time to presentation. Children from more deprived areas had significantly higher perforation rates (44%), suggesting factors beyond delayed care-seeking contribute to worse outcomes.
