Is Abdominal Sonography a Useful Adjunct to Abdominal Radiography in Evaluating Neonates with Suspected Necrotizing Enterocolitis?

Multi-center retrospective study comparing abdominal ultrasound to conventional radiography in 66 neonates with suspected necrotizing enterocolitis found moderate concordance between modalities, with ultrasound detecting pneumatosis and portal venous gas more frequently. Ultrasound-detected pneumatosis and focal fluid collections were associated with longer antibiotic courses.
