Morphology of the fetal renal pelvis during the second trimester: Comparing genders

Stereological analysis of 34 fetal renal pelvises (13-23 weeks gestation) reveals significant structural differences between genders. Male fetuses show higher connective tissue content with age-dependent increase and lower smooth muscle cell density compared to females, potentially explaining the male predominance of postnatal renal pelvis ectasia.
