Single-lateral cervical radiograph in pediatric trauma is equivalent to multiple views.
Topic overview
Retrospective study of 3,735 pediatric trauma patients demonstrates that single lateral cervical radiographs detect all bony cervical spine injuries with equivalent accuracy to multiple-view series, supporting reduced radiation exposure protocols. MRI rather than CT is recommended when ligamentous injury is suspected, as lateral radiographs missed only soft tissue injuries.
