Changing the Paradigm for Management of Pediatric Primary Spontaneous Pneumothorax: A Simple Aspiration Test Predicts Need for Operation

Multi-center prospective study of 33 pediatric patients demonstrates that simple aspiration test predicts chest tube failure with 83% positive predictive value in primary spontaneous pneumothorax. Findings support revised management algorithm: initial aspiration test followed by direct VATS if aspiration fails, potentially reducing hospital stays and recurrence rates compared to traditional chest tube management.
