Early Enteral Feeding after Pediatric Abdominal Surgery: A Systematic Review of the Literature

Systematic review of 14 studies demonstrates that early enteral feeding after pediatric abdominal surgery reduces hospital length of stay and accelerates time to full nutrition without increasing complications. Evidence challenges traditional practice of prolonged postoperative fasting in children undergoing procedures including neonatal surgery, gastrostomy formation, and intestinal anastomoses.
