Clinicopathological study of intestinal smooth muscles, interstitial cells of Cajal and enteric neurons in neonatal jejunoileal atresia with special reference to muscle morphometry

Histopathological study of 15 neonatal jejunoileal atresia cases reveals significant smooth muscle hypertrophy and altered ICC/enteric neuron distribution in proximal dilated segments, most pronounced within 5cm of the atretic site. Findings suggest optimal resection margins should extend at least 8cm proximally where tissue architecture more closely resembles normal bowel.
