Maternal and placental risk factors associated with the development of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and its severity

This case-control study of 270 infants identifies abnormal antenatal umbilical artery flow, clinical chorioamnionitis, and histological chorioamnionitis as independent predictors of necrotizing enterocolitis development. Preeclampsia and placental inflammation are associated with more severe NEC cases.
