Torsion of otherwise healthy ovary has a worse prognosis than torsion of pathologic ovary in children

Retrospective study of 54 pediatric ovarian torsion cases found that torsion of otherwise healthy ovaries has significantly worse outcomes than torsion with underlying ovarian masses, with higher rates of atrophy (74% vs 19%). Late surgical intervention and absence of pathologic mass were identified as key prognostic factors for ovarian loss.
