What the experts said
Material thickness is more important than cap style for determining safety in the operating room
The study 'Hats Off, a study of different operating room headgear assessed by environmental quality indicators' was conducted by first author Dr. Troy Markle and senior author Dr. Jennifer Wagner at Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis
The study compared three types of operating room hats: cloth skullcaps, disposable bouffant caps, and disposable skullcaps
The study evaluated material permeability and porosity, air contaminants, and field contaminants in a mock operating room
Air contaminants were assessed through active sampling with a vacuum that evaluated the air
Passive sampling assessed what was found on the field, both microbial and particles
The disposable bouffant cap had the most permeability and was the most porous of all three hat types
Active air sampling with vacuum showed no difference in contamination between the three cap types
Field sampling showed disposable bouffant caps had the highest shedding of microbial and particle contaminants on the surgical field
Cloth skullcaps had the lowest permeability, lowest porous material, and very low shedding compared to disposable bouffant caps
