Topic Overview
Key Takeaways
- Nephron-sparing surgery for unilateral Wilms tumor preserves higher postoperative GFR compared to radical nephrectomy.
- No significant difference in overall survival or recurrence rates between nephron-sparing surgery and radical nephrectomy.
- Long-term outcomes (hypertension, renal dysfunction) are comparable between nephron-sparing and radical approaches.
- Meta-analysis of 26 studies supports nephron-sparing surgery as safe and effective for unilateral Wilms tumor.
- Preserving renal parenchyma offers functional benefit without compromising oncologic outcomes in selected patients.

Do you do nephron sparing surgery or radical nephrectomy when you're treating a unilateral Wilms tumor? Hi, I'm Cecilia Picena from Cinciatti Children's Hospital, and I think this is an article that you should know about. This is a systematic review and meta analysis done in Chongqing China that aim to evaluate the efficacy and long-term renal function after nephron sparing surgery in patients with unilateral Wilms tumor. And what did they find? They gathered 26 studies, and what they found is that nephron sparing surgery increased the glomerular filtration after surgery, with no significant differences in overall survival, recurrences, hypertension, or renal dysfunction compared to radical nephrectomy. Let us know what you think, and stay tuned for more articles that you should know about.
