Topic Overview
Meta-analysis of 1,298 pediatric patients demonstrates that Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols in colorectal surgery reduce hospital length of stay, opioid use, and costs without increasing complication rates compared to standard perioperative management.
Key Takeaways
- ERAS protocols in pediatric colorectal surgery reduce hospital length of stay without increasing complication rates.
- Patients managed with ERAS protocols require significantly less opioid analgesia postoperatively.
- ERAS implementation decreases hospital costs while maintaining equivalent safety outcomes compared to traditional care.
- Meta-analysis of 1,298 pediatric patients demonstrates consistent ERAS benefits across 10 studies.
- Complication rates remain unchanged with ERAS, supporting its safety profile in pediatric colorectal procedures.

Do you use US protocol for colorectal surgery? Hi, I'm Cecilia Gena from Cincinnati Children's Hospital, and I think this is an article that you should know about. This is a meta-analysis that wanted to see the effects of the ERS protocol in pediatric colorectal surgery. And what did they? Find they had 10 studies with 1,298 patients and what they find is that patients that had US protocols around the colorectal surgery had less length of stay, less opiate use, less hospital cost, but the complications rates were the same in both groups. Let us know what you think and stay tuned for more articles that you should know about.
