Key Takeaways
- Early peritoneal dialysis after pediatric cardiac surgery is associated with decreased postoperative mortality in infants
- Early PD initiation shortens mechanical ventilation duration compared to delayed or no dialysis
- Early PD reduces ICU length of stay in post-cardiac surgery infants
- Systematic review included five studies supporting early dialysis intervention
- Proactive fluid management via early PD may improve hemodynamic stability and organ perfusion post-operatively

Can early initiation of peritoneal dialysis after pediatric cardiac surgery improve outcomes? I'm Alex Halpern, general surgery resident from George Washington University, working with Cincinnati Children's. And this is an article that you should know. Dr. Duman and his team performed a systematic review and meta analysis trying to answer this question. They ended up including five studies in their meta analysis. And what did they find? They found that early initiation of peritoneal dialysis was associated with a decreased post-op mortality. They also found that early initiation of peritoneal dialysis shortened duration of mechanical ventilation and shortened length of stay in the ICU. So it seems that early initiation of peritoneal dialysis may benefit infants after pediatric cardiac surgery. Let us know what you think in the comments below.
