A simple preoperative bath with soap and water reduces surgical site infections.
The randomized study was conducted at Mumbili National Hospital in Tanzania.
The study included 252 patients, of whom 114 received a preoperative bath.
In patients who received a preoperative bath, the surgical site infection rate was 11.4%.
In patients who did not receive a preoperative bath, the surgical site infection rate was 40.6%.
Preoperative bathing reduced the probability of surgical site infection by 80%.
