What the experts said
A prospective study was conducted in the United States through the Midwest pediatric surgery consortium
The study evaluated patients undergoing laparoscopic pyloromyotomy to identify patent processus vaginalis and followed them with annual calls to assess progression to inguinal hernia
The study plans to follow patients until 18 years of age, but this represents an interim analysis after 4 years of follow-up
526 patients underwent laparoscopic pyloromyotomy in the study
283 patients had a patent processus vaginalis, either bilateral, left, or right
208 patients with PPV were followed for at least one year
Only three patients required surgical hernia repair during follow-up
The vast majority of patients with patent processus vaginalis did not develop clinical inguinal hernia presentation despite having PPV
Not all patent processus vaginalis discovered during other surgery may need to be closed
