Children at risk: A prospective cohort study of acute stress development and patterns in pediatric trauma patients

When a child survives a traumatic injury, is the hardest part really over? I'm Lizzie Lee from Cincinnati Children's, and this is an article you should know about. In this prospective study of more than 600 pediatric trauma patients, over 75% had at least some acute stress symptoms at discharge. Younger children and girls were at highest risk. The encouraging news, most improved within a month, but nearly 17% still screened positive, and some developed worsening symptoms after going home. The message is clear, early screening and intervention may be just as essential as the physical care that saved their life.
