The article about timing of pediatric tracheostomy after traumatic injury was published in the Journal of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine in 2021.
The authors analyzed the National Trauma Data Bank and identified over 40,000 adolescent trauma victims who were intubated for more than 24 hours and survived until discharge.
The study stratified patients into TBI and non-TBI groups and examined tracheostomy timing at 3 and 7 days.
At 3 days, there was no difference in overall hospital length of stay between early and late tracheostomy groups.
In adolescent trauma patients without TBI, tracheostomy before 3 days resulted in a decreased ICU length of stay by approximately 16 days compared to later tracheostomy.
Similar trends of decreased ICU length of stay were seen for all adolescent trauma patients regardless of TBI or non-TBI status if they received tracheostomy before 7 days of intubation.
