In brief

In brief

POLISHeR is a 3D-printed surgical simulator designed to train surgeons in both open and laparoscopic pediatric inguinal hernia repair techniques. The device addresses the need for repetitive practice in mastering groin anatomy and surgical approaches, offering a combined training platform for residents, fellows, and practicing surgeons.

  • Inguinal hernia repair is a fundamental pediatric surgical skill requiring mastery of complex groin anatomy.
  • Both open and laparoscopic IHR techniques demand significant repetition to achieve proficiency.
  • POLISHeR is a 3D-printed dual-modality simulator enabling trainees to practice both open and laparoscopic hernia repair.
  • Surgical simulators have demonstrated efficacy in improving operative performance across multiple procedures.
  • The simulator addresses training needs for residents, fellows, and practicing surgeons seeking skill development.

Inguinal hernia is a common childhood pathology, making inguinal hernia repair (IHR) a key pediatric surgical procedure. Surgical success relies heavily on knowledge of groin anatomy, and both open and laparoscopic approaches require considerable repetition to master. As surgical simulators have been shown to improve performance for other surgical procedures, we developed a combined open and laparoscopic pediatric IHR simulator—named POLISHeR—to train residents, fellows, and practicing surgeons in both types of repair.
