In brief
This study evaluates ion transport function in jejunum lengthened using an expandable spring device in a porcine model of short bowel syndrome. The research addresses whether mechanically lengthened intestine retains normal absorptive capabilities, critical for treating nutrient malabsorption in patients with insufficient small bowel.
- Expandable spring devices can mechanically trigger intestinal lengthening in short bowel syndrome models
- Spring-lengthened jejunum requires functional assessment of ion transport to validate clinical utility
- Epithelial ion transport capacity determines nutrient absorption and fluid balance in lengthened bowel
Written by the GCMD Library team from the article.
Loss of functional small intestine in short bowel syndrome results in profound nutrient malabsorption and diarrhea. We previously developed an expandable spring device that triggers intestinal lengthening. The aim of this study was to assess the functional ion transport capabilities of spring-lengthened jejunum.
