In brief

In brief

This viewpoint discusses a joint APSA-SVS taskforce addressing pediatric vascular disease management through collaboration between pediatric and adult vascular surgeons. The authors outline the scope of congenital and acquired vascular conditions in children and propose pathways to improve interdisciplinary care delivery.

  • A joint APSA-SVS taskforce was created to define optimal care models for pediatric vascular disease across both congenital and acquired conditions.
  • Pediatric vascular surgery requires interdisciplinary collaboration between pediatric surgeons and adult vascular surgeons for complex cases.
  • The taskforce aims to establish clear pathways for who should treat pediatric vascular patients and where that care should be delivered.
  • Vascular disease in children encompasses both congenital anomalies and acquired conditions, requiring specialized expertise from multiple disciplines.

What comprises vascular disease in children? Who is best suited to care for them? And where should this care be provided? These are the questions that spurred the creation 3 years ago of a joint national taskforce between the American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) and the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS). The authors of this Viewpoint (D.H.R. and R.F.W., pediatric surgeons; J.V.W. and D.M.C., adult vascular surgeons) have had the privilege of working jointly and with a dedicated group of colleagues in both disciplines to define the scope of vascular diseases, congenital and acquired, and propose pathways for improvement in the collaborative efforts that are required to render best care in often complex cases.
